Personal Statement

Dr. Castillo graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and subsequently completed a pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. From 2005 to 2008, he completed a National Research Service Award Fellowship in General Pediatric Research, also at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. In 2008, Dr. Castillo obtained a master of public health from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. In the same year, he joined the Division of General & Community Pediatrics as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. In 2012, he also completed a fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics also at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He has been a member of the National Hispanic Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academic Pediatric Association, and the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.

He is currently a faculty member in the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics at Texas Children's Hospital/BCM. In this position, he has teaching responsibilities for fellows and residents and collaborates with faculty in his department who are particularly focused on education and training regarding issues of global health, immigrant health, racial/ethnic disparities. His continuing interest is the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs related to trainee education in global health and disparities issues. He also collaborates with colleagues pursuing academic activities related to matters of equity in medicine and in processes that address them, principally with regard to the clinical care of Latino and Limited English Proficiency patients with Spina Bifida. He has been involved with a number of projects in Latin America and has ongoing work in Nicaragua.

His research interests include: Spina Bifida, Fetal Interventions Impacting Neurodevelopment, and Global Health Education.
